Summer is just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited! Be careful, though. Overexposure to harmful UV rays, excess sweat, sea salt, and chlorinated pool water can all severely damage your hair. Yikes! With all the getaways and beach trips you’ve surely got planned with the family and barkada, make sure your hair is protected and healthy all summer long.
Here’s how you can protect your hair from sun damage this summer
1. Get a fresh trim
Whether you have long hair or short hair, the summer heat can leave the ends of your hair brittle and dry. Freshen it up by paying a visit to your favorite salon and bring back some life into your locks.
2. Protect your hair during summer
We hate to be the bearers of bad news but summer can seriously damage your hair. The chlorine in swimming pools can strip your hair of its natural oils while the heavy salt water content in sea water draws moisture out of your scalp and hair. On top of that, the constant exposure to the sun’s extreme UV rays can leave your hair dull and lifeless. For girls with colored hair, constant exposure to sunlight can also cause your hair color to fade faster than it normally would.
Just like with your skin, your hair also needs protection from the sun. Apply a leave-on conditioner that has UV protecting actives to keep your hair protected while you’re having some serious fun under the sun!
3. Use hair polish
If your hair is already feeling a bit damaged from all the sun exposure, don’t panic – there’s still hope! A good quality hair polish can help revive your hair by bringing back moisture into the strands, preventing split ends and breakage for smooth, strong, and silky hair.
4. Shampoo properly
You may not know this but shampooing your hair every day is actually not recommendable! It strips your hair and scalp of its natural oils, leaving your hair dull and prone to breakage. But with the Philippines hot and humid weather, we know how gross and icky not shampooing your hair can feel like. If you absolutely must wash your hair, choose a mild shampoo and concentrate on cleansing your scalp, not the actual strands of hair.
5. Protect your hair before styling
The summer heat is already putting a lot of stress on your hair, but we know using styling tools such as blow dryers and flat irons are sometimes unavoidable in order to achieve those cute summer looks. Before reaching for your favorite styling tool, remember to put on a layer of heat protecting coating to your hair first! Your hair will surely thank you for it.
